Location and Landscape
The estate is located near Tenterden in Kent, and is easily accessible from London, while its proximity to Dover and the Eurostar station at Ashford make it equally convenient for guests travelling from northern France and Belgium.
Being located immediately south-west of the town, the estate commands quite unique and uninterrupted views all the way to Fairlight and Hastings on the south coast. To the south-west, the views extend over the Rother valley, one of the most unspoilt corners of south-east England, past Bodiam and Robertsbridge and all the way to Brightling.
Unusually for an estate of its size in Kent, Morghew is not bisected by any public roads, making it an absolutely ideal location for a shoot. The acreage is split fairly evenly between Wealden upland and marsh, with the upland consisting of smallish arable fields surrounded by hawthorn hedges interspersed with mature oaks. Throughout the upland, there are a number of pieces of ancient woodland (which is defined as pre-dating 1600) totalling about 150 acres, and many of these woods contain steep-sided gills (gullies) which allow the shoot to show some impressively high birds. Many of these woods are flanked or connected by a total of about 20 acres of cover crops.
There are various points on the Estate where the upland descends quite steeply onto the marsh. As well as providing some of the beautiful distant views, these banks deliver further opportunities to show high birds. The marsh itself is ideal for wildfowling, possessing an abundance of watercourses and two large reservoirs covering an area of nearly five acres.
