Evening Duck Flighting

The Morghew Park Estate is quite simply a fantastic place for inland wildfowling.  Perhaps as much as a third of the Estate’s 2000 acres consist of marshland which is criss-crossed with dykes and watercourses of one sort or another, and even the upland is liberally scattered with ponds.

Most of our duck-flighting takes place over a five acre reservoir which supports a substantial population of Mallard, Teale, Wigeon, Greylag and Canada geese, whose presence on and loyalty to the Estate is not unconnected with the tons of reject potatoes and cereals that are fed throughout the winter months.  Indeed, our reservoirs are a magnet which draw birds in from all over this part of the Rother valley, and this explains the remarkably consistent bags achieved by our wildfowlers over the past few years.

A typical evening’s duck flighting goes something like this.  The team usually arrive and after a brief team talk, we set off to the reservoirs, which are a mile or so away.  Upon our arrival, it’s usual for any geese and some of the ducks to depart, and the guns draw straws for the hides, which are made of laurel bushes planted around three sides of a square. Then the waiting begins …

Duck flighting at Morghew is made all the more memorable by the location of our reservoirs on the marsh at the southern end of the Estate.  From any of our hides, you can quite literally see for miles across the Rother valley, and shooting aside, it’s an astonishing place to stand and watch the sun go down – particularly on those magical occasions when the setting sun projects a red light onto the underside of high cloud.

The cost is £75 per gun plus £10 per gun for the pickers up and there are no limits on bag.
