Welcome to the Morghew Shoot’s 2010/2011 season website. My name is David Carr and I would like to introduce myself as the Shoot Captain at The Morghew Shoot. The forthcoming season will be The Estate's eighth, and it’s very satisfying to see how many roving syndicates and wildfowlers are already making a day at Morghew an important part of their shooting calendar. Every spring, in the months before the arable harvest, we invest heavily in works to improve drives, create new ones and generally take steps to get the best out of our drives, our birds and our landscape.
Why does all this matter? Because we believe Morghew has the potential to become one of the finest commercial shoots in the south east of England. There’s our mission statement for you. And as we’ve resisted the temptation to let the whole shoot to a single syndicate (and we’ve been asked more times than I care to recall), any roving syndicate, corporate team or group of friends can book a day’s or evening’s shooting at Morghew - subject to availability.
And what’s so special about Morghew? Let me put it like this. Estate agents go on and on about ‘location, location and location’, and I think this applies equally to shooting. Yes, shooting 100 or more quality birds over the course of six or seven hours is what a day’s shooting is all about, but the setting or location for all this is arguably just as important.
The Morghew Shoot has the priceless advantage of operating over the nearly 2000 acres of the Morghew Park Estate at Tenterden, Kent, and the land is in a ring-fence, meaning it is not crossed by any public roads. Out of twenty or so main drives available to the shoot, only one is located within 500 yards of a public road and some drives are a mile or more from the nearest road. On top of this, the scenery is beautiful and unspoilt, made up of traditional Wealden upland (small fields and hawthorn hedges interspersed with mature Oak stands) descending steeply in places onto classic unspoilt marshland where dikes act as field boundaries. As one would hope, this topography has given the shoot the opportunity to show birds which will challenge even the most experienced Guns – with several drives offering a combination of high birds and snap-shooting.
And can we recommend accomodation nearby? Yes we can. Last season several teams stayed at The White Lion. An excellent Inn located in Tenterden's High Street, just a few minutes from the Estate. You can call on 01580 765077 or email whitelion.tenterden@marstons.co.uk
to book your stay. Remember to mention The Morghew Shoot and the staff will look after you for us and help make the best of your stay.
